Mississippi Makeover
Implementation Plan
June 2011

The ultimate goal of the Mississippi Makeover Project is a healthy and protected ecosystem that attracts abundant wildlife, becomes a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, and provides economic benefits to local communities in the areas of Spring Lake, the Lower Vermillion River and Pool 3 of the Mississippi River. To accomplish this, the Project engaged local citizens in visioning and planning for ecosystem restoration in this area. A Citizen Advisory Group (CAG) was formed that includes elected officials, citizens, non-governmental organizations, agencies, industry, and commerce. Over the course of several meetings and with input from technical experts, the CAG recommended a series of targets or goals for ecological restoration in this area using indicators such as water clarity, aquatic vegetation, sedimentation, invertebrates, fish and waterfowl. Please see the link to "Indicator Targets".

In 2011, the CAG helped complete the Implementation Plan for this area which included a prioritization of large restoration activities like island building, water level management, shoreland habitat management and more. The Implementation Plan Fact Sheet provides a summary of needed restoration projects and the CAG priorities.

Today the Mississippi Makeover Project continues to engage citizens and elected officials, track progress towards the restoration goals, and coordinate with other groups and organizations to implement restoration.

This Project is funded by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and is coordinated by the Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation.
